It's coming up to the end of the year, so now is the time for family, holiday, reflection – and going out to party for New Year's Eve! If you're a student and you're trying to decide what you should do to ring in the new year, then follow these tips for an unforgettable evening.

1. Plan in advance

The last thing you want is to leave all your planning until the last minute. Events sell out quickly on New Year's Eve, and your friends will make plans in advance – so make sure that you put together a plan early. Going to a bar or club can be extremely expensive for new year – between pricey entry fees and ridiculously expensive drinks, plus transport to and from the event – so if you're trying to save some cash then you have two options. You can either attend a public event, like fireworks or a concert in a public square, or you can throw a house party. House parties are always popular with students, as they're a cheap and fun way to celebrate together.

2. Invite people you normally wouldn't

New year is a time to spend with your close friends and family, sure – but it's also a fun time to get to know some new people. You can invite friends of friends, fellow students from your university, or people you've just met recently. Particularly if you've just started a new course or moved to a new city, throwing a party or organising an evening out is a great way to get to know new people as well as celebrating with those you already know.

3. Mix your own drinks

As mentioned before, drinks can be extremely pricey on New Year's Eve, especially if you want to drink champagne or something else special. If you're trying to stay on a budget, then have some fun mixing your own drinks. For a house party, for example, you can make a big bowl of punch and share it with all your guests. Remember to include some soft drink options to keep you hydrated while you party, and if you want some special bubbly wine but don't want to shell out for champagne, then try cava or prosecco instead.

4. Don't forget about food

When you're out celebrating – especially if you're going to be drinking – you mustn't forget to eat something! If you want to stay out late and party, then you need to fuel yourself with enough food over the evening to keep you going. Prepare some snacks for your party or put a bag of crisps in your bag for later so you'll have something to munch on when the hour gets late. And don't underestimate the importance of eating a solid dinner before you go out. It can even be a fun excuse to cook dinner with a group of friends before you leave for the party.

5. Make sure you can all get home safely

Transport on New Year's Eve can be a pain, and getting a taxi home in the early hours can be hideously expensive. Be sure to make a plan for how you and all of your friends will get home once the party is done, or arrange to stay at someone else's place where you can sleep before heading home the next day. If you're in a big city, check up on the public transport options and you might even find free travel options – in London, for example, you can travel on public transport for free on New Year's Eve so you'll easily be able to get home safe.

However you end up celebrating New Year's Eve, we hope that you will follow these tips and enjoy an unforgettable night! Best wishes to you for the new year from everyone at STUDYPUNK!
